Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens had a surprise up his sleeve prior to the team’s preseason opener Tuesday versus the Philadelphia 76ers.

With the Celtics dealing with various injuries, Stevens is starting end-of-the-bench role player Javonte Green alongside Jayson Tatum, Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown and Robert Williams. Williams also was thrusted into the starting lineup with Tristan Thompson (right hamstring strain) and Daniel Theis (low back soreness) sitting out due to ailments.

Green was an interesting selection by Stevens as he could have given the nod to one of the more acclaimed rookies or second-year players on the roster. But Stevens plans to give all 13 players suiting up at least 10 minutes on the court.
“We’re going to rotate that spot,” said Stevens on his decision to start Greene as Stevens added he wants to see who can play best alongside Tatum and Brown.

Green played a very limited role in his first year with the Celtics last season. The athletic wing played in 48 games and averaged 9.8 minutes, 3.4 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. Green, who made two starts a season ago, did put together a standout performance in the final regular season game in the bubble when he poured in 23 points.

The Celtics will also be without Kemba Walker (left knee strengthening) and Romeo Langford (right wrist surgery), opening up more playing time for Boston’s usual reserves.
Javonte Green is a fighter.
He went undrafted after four years at Radford, hardly a basketball powerhouse. He played for teams in Spain, Italy, and Germany after that, building up a solid enough resume to earn a summer league invitation with the Boston Celtics last year. His performance there, and in training camp, was so dazzling that it forced Boston to change their mind about Max Struss, who had already received a guaranteed deal, and give Green a shot.

Green was used sparingly, appearing in 48 games for mostly brief stints, but his larger opportunities showed some promise for his future. Now he’s back, but fighting all over again.
Green’s contract is not guaranteed, so he can be cut between now an February if the Celtics suddenly find themselves in need of a roster spot or salary relief. There is opportunity for minutes, but a lot of players who are trying to stake equal claim to them.

“I feel like that’s what we have here, a deep bench that guys can step in and I’m get in positions to fill that hole when a guy’s down,” Green said. “I feel like we’re deep here and it’s just a good thing to have an NBA team to have such a deep roster.”
Green’s bubble stint was cut short by a small meniscus tear in his right knee, which required surgery to repair.
“You know, it’s a bummer last year with the timing that it happened, when it happened,” he said. “But, you know, it was a great, great experience, the bubble is a great experience. Making it to the Eastern Conference Finals and everything, that was a great experience. For me, as a teammate, my teammates, I feel it in as a jumping board to this year.”

The knee has healed and Green comes into camp with at least the advantage of experience. After a year of experience, he’s not so wide-eyed about everything.
“I feel great. Coming into training camp last year vs. coming into training camp this year, it’s a huge difference,” he said. “Last year I didn’t know what to expect, like, how to carry anything. Just the work, here, now, I know what I have to do and what positions I have to be in. I know like the defensive schemes and offensive plays and stuff like that. So I feel like I have an advantage this year. Just going out there and just at the end of the day just keep playing hard like I did last year.”
Green has a chance to stick around and help the Celtics, but it’s not going to come easy. The only thing he can do to get that opportunity is the same thing he’s always done: work hard and be a good teammate.
“All Brad (Stevens) wants us to do is play hard,” Green said. “I feel like everything is just fitting in well. Everybody’s just trying to figure each other out and just trying to use that springboard from last year to make each other better and just figure out how we take that next step.”
